What is a Tactical Pencil?

The common name for this is the Tactical Pen. It is also called a StrikePen. At its core and in terms of its origin, it is a variation of the Kubotan, a weapon composed of a short stick, usually of about 5 to 6 inches in length, created and introduced to female police officers of the Los Angeles police force in the mid 1960’s by the accomplished Japanese born martial arts master Takayuki Kubota .

Read more about the Kubotan and its creator here.

Use of the StrikePen as a weapon focuses on the targeting of a range of, vulnerable areas of the body. Among these are exposed fleshy areas (such as the neck), vital organs (liver, kidneys, eyes, groin) as well as joint areas particularly susceptible to the high impact of the weapon’s metallic shaft.

The favored grip for a tactical pencil is the icepick grip. Here, the point of the shaft protrudes out of the clenched fist. Strikes, to be effective, must be efficient, direct stabbing motions. Because of the small surface area of the impact point, great force is delivered.

Using a tactical pen properly requires specific training. See more and view our tutorials here: How to Use a Tactical Pen.

Construction Materials

The most common metals used are aluminium, steel or titanium. Because they can be carried in a pocket or bag, they are also easily easily concealable. Essentially, a tactical pencil is a metal reinforced pen used for self defense. Aircraft grade aluminium is a popular metal for products at the lower price range. It allows for a light, but powerful shaft. Other utilities are often integrated to create a multi-functional tool: a glass breaker, DNA sample collector and LED Flashlight, for example. The shaft of a self defense pen is designed for maximum grip and is thus often grooved or furrowed.

Is a Tactical Pen Practical?

This is a major question. Strike Pens can be very effective, but they must be used by a person properly trained to wield them. This is particularly so for many female users or people of smaller build. We do have a number of demonstrative videos onsite and we offer resources for training and study. The formal techniques for using these weapons are designed to target specific areas of the body in close contact, with quick, efficient strokes that deliver maximum impact in order to disable an attacker immediately.

Is a Tactical Pen Legal to Carry?

Tactical pens do not carry an official classification as weapons nationwide, but this can vary within certain local jurisdictions and there can be a good deal of subjectivity. However, you may be restricted from having them on you in certain circumstances, such as when boarding an airplane.

Because this is an important and unclear subject of discussion, we have much more on our article: Are Tactical Pens Legal?

Price Ranges

Depending on the design, construction and range of functionality of the device, prices range on average from about $10 up to $100. For a self defense tool, such low prices make these a very practical choice.
