What is a Tac Pen?

This is an alternative term for the more universal name; “Tactical Pen”. It is also informally called a Strikepen. The weapon is a variation of the Kubotan, a martial arts weapon composed of a short stick, usually of wood, metal or even plastic up to 6 inches long. It was originally assigned to female police officers within the Los Angeles Police force a half century or so ago in the 1960’s. It is one of the most popular Everyday Carry (EDC) tools for self defense enthusiasts, survivalists, the prepper community and outdoors adventurists.

Proper use of the Tac Pen as a weapon focuses on the identifying and targeting of a number of particularly, vulnerable sections of the body. The most important of these are vital organs such as the liver, groin, kidneys as well as generally exposed fleshy regions such as the neck. A number of specific bony areas are also quite vulnerable to the high impacts achieved through thrusts with this item.

Holding a Tactical Pen

The strikepen must be held in a firm grip to deliver effective strikes with force. The most common hold is the ice-pick grip, where the pen’s point protrudes through the bottom of a tightly clenched fist. Strikes must be delivered with short, direct, precise stabs. The impact area for blows is extremely small, so a great amount of force is delivered to targets.

Construction Materials

Manufactured from steel, aluminium or titanium, a Kubaton Pen is -for all intents and purposes- just like a normal pen. It functions just the same in that you can use it for writing, so that, from a casual glance, it is indistinguishable form a normal pen. This makes it easily concealable. Additionally, it can be carried in your pocket; in a bag; in a backpack, so it can be easily and quickly accessed in the event of an emergency. In essence, it is a metal reinforced pen that is also used for self defense through sharp, hard, direct and precise strokes. To produce a durable, sturdy item, aircraft grade aluminium is a popular material for the manufacture of a tac pen. The end product is a lightweight, but highly durable shaft. In higher quality products, a number of popular and useful utilities are also integrated to create a multi-functional EDC tool: these may include one or more of the following: a glass breaker, DNA sample collector and LED Flashlight and more. In order to allow for superior grip, the shaft of the item is often grooved or furrowed.

Is a Tactical Pen a Practical Weapon?

This is a serious question and one that is often asked. TacticalPens can be highly effective, but because of clear limits in the situational ranges within which they are effective, the user must be properly trained to use them. For example, a female user or a person of smaller stature or build is normally at a physical disadvantage against an assailant. So specific defense techniques must be employed to nullify these disadvantages and being able to properly use these techniques only comes with adequate training.

We feature a number of tutorial videos onsite as beginner guides and we offer other resources for training and study. The authoritative, formalized techniques for using this weapon (as well as similar weapons such as the previously mentioned Kubotan) are designed to target particular, specific areas of the body in close proximity situation, with quick, efficient, hard strikes that deliver maximum impact in order to disable an attacker in as short a time as possible.
